Some 3,000 Yezidis who fled their homes three years ago and sought refuge on Mount Shingal have chosen to remain on the mountain.

These are the faces of some of them who are "living an unordinary life” in the words of Hussein Suleiman, a father of six. "We are not planning anything for our future, because we are here and we have nothing."

They say they do not want to go to cities like Zakho or Duhok or more established camps for internally displaced but will stay on the mountain that has always been a refuge for Yezidis until they can return to their own villages. “We have our cities, our homes we built block by block. Why should we leave?” asked Suleiman.
