In this book, the authors and experts elaborate on many important issues and shed light on the vibrant dynamics of this emerging democracy in Kurdistan Region.
The book also refers to the suffering of Kurds during Saddam Hussein’s rule and the economic boom in the Kurdistan Region after the fall of Saddam. However, the region’s economy soon faced a drastic decline due to the Islamic State’s (IS) emergence, sheltering 1.8 million internally displaced people and refugees, the global fall in oil prices and withholding the region’s share from the federal budget by former Iraqi PM Nouri Maliki in 2014.
The Kurdistan Region has planned to hold a referendum on independence on September 25, 2017.
The co-authors of the book are Sasha Toperich and Téa Ivanovic from The Center for Transatlantic Relations, SAIS, at The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington D.C. and Nahro Zagros, the Vice President of Soran University for Scientific Affairs in the Kurdistan Region.
