The Iraqi Kurdish author Bachtyar Ali was awarded the Nelly Sachs Prize, the City of Dortmund's literary prize for 2017.

The jury session run by a number of literary critics in Dortmund, Germany, decided to award the 2017 Nelly Sachs Prize to the Kurdish author Bachtyar Ali.

Bachtyar Ali is one of the most important authors of the Middle East whose work is largely undetected in the West. He writes in Kurdish Sorani dialect. From his extensive work, two novels ‘The City of White Musicians’ and ‘The Last Pomegranate’ have been published in German, which were enthusiastically received by the critics.

“Bachtyar Ali's work is a manifesto of life and poetry. With recourse to the myths and the spirituality of the Orient as well as by high moral demands and great commitment, the author breaks a lance for humanity,” says jury member and writer Stefan Weidner.

Bachtyar Ali was born in 1966 in Sulaymaniyah Province of Kurdistan Region. He has been living in Germany since mid-1990s. His texts point far beyond the Kurdish world.

The Nelly Sachs Prize will be presented on December 10 in a ceremony at the Dortmund Town Hall.

Nelly Sachs Prize is awarded by Dortmund city every two years to the figures who produce outstanding creative achievements in the field of literary and spiritual life which promote tolerance, mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and reconciliation among the peoples and cultures to overcome cultural, ethnic, and religious boundaries.
